Instagram Summer: Indian Wedding
The day before the actual wedding the bride’s hands and feet are covered with henna. All of the girls in the family come to her house and we apply henna and perform funny skits and sing embarrassing songs and dance Indian dances. I guess this is what we do in lieu of a bachelorette party.
The color of the henna should turn a dark red, that means the marriage will be A+.
Above are some of my favorite cousins doing a dance for Naushin.
Before the mehndi (henna) party you have what we call the haldi ceremony. This is when the bride’s friends and family take a tumeric (haldi) paste and spread it all over the bride’s face, hands, feet and arms. It’s supposed to encourage fairness and beauty, something like that. Really it’s just hilarious and everyone ends up running around rubbing haldi in each other’s faces.
Me with my henna’d hands (an experimental, free-art approach. Not your typical henna patterns :D)
