How About That of the Day: For 24 years, Canada was forced to watch as its national Under 17 soccer team lost match after FIFA U-17 World Cup match, outscored by superior players 45-3 across 13 games.
Enter: Quillan Roberts, the team’s 16-year-old reserve goalie, who, in the 87th minute of play against England, with his team down 2-1, shot a powerful kick from the halfway to score the first goal by a keeper in any full-sided FIFA tournament, and, more importantly, delivered Canada’s first match point in nearly a quarter century.
“I was just trying to get it on (teammate) Sadi Jalali’s head,” Roberts later said. “It just took a lucky bounce and went over the goalie.”
